Laserscanning

Reconstruction of a crime scene by means of modern surveying instruments

Laserscanners are very essential for doing modern reconstruction of a crime scene. The technology of series from Hollywood like "CSI Miami" is in accordance with the actual criminal working.

The Federal Criminal Agency and nearly all State Offices of Criminal Investigation in Germany use Laserscanner as a matter of routine for reconstruction of violent felony and traffic accidents. Since many decades crime scenes are measured and recorded by means of technical scientific methods. The main intention is obvious: a mostly gapless and free of hypotheses reconstruction of the crime performance. To monitor the geometry in former times primitive tools like inch rules and tape measures were utilized. Today the most modern measuring systems of geodesy come into operation: tachymeter, GNSS receiver, digital cameras and particularly terrestrial Laser scanner. Laser scanner provide the big advantage of quick monitoring with much details for complicated crime scenes. A very essential point is the working without any contact during the whole process. That means the scene remains completely unchanged.

Surveying experts of the State Offices of Criminal Investigation rebuild the crime performance at the PC after having collected the data. For example the locations where the shots have been fired off are very essential for crimes with guns. Final results are access CAD prints, views or 3D animations which can be given to the federal prosecutors and judges as a fundamental proof.

Technology & industry

How is it possible that we don't miss each other when boring a tunnel from two sides? Why is the shelf at home always crooked but the 300 m high building bolt upright? - Because geomatics engineers take care of it.

Climate & environment

What happens where while it is getting warmer? How does our environment change? Where does sea level rise come from? Are the continents drying out? Are the continental plates still sliding on top of each other as they did in the past? - Geomatics engineers measure changes and answer questions.

Real estate

Everyone has seen geomatics engineers in the field. Using their instruments they sometimes work at the roadside. Car drivers slow down, thinking of speed control. Children stop by craving for the colorful security jackets. - But what are the engineers really doing there?

Navigation & Mobility

In the past, the front passenger said: "There should be a right turn soon." Today, this is not enough anymore. Dead-ends, new roundabouts, nearby points of interest – a modern navigation system seems to know everything. - If it does, this is just due to geomatics…
