Jobportraits

Jan Lott

Applications engineer at Automated Precision Europe GmbH

What are the tasks for you in your present job?
I am working as applications engineer at a producer for lasertracker and other laser measuring systems. My responsibility deals with service and support for our customers all over Europe. I perform training of our customers to handle our hardware and the used software, I automate complex measuring sequences for them, integrate our products in other systems and support our customers also in doing complicated measuring tasks.

What did you do in your job last week?
Last week I was in Turkey to give support in technical details and train our local distributor in performing presentations. It is difficult to describe my everyday work life. To offer the optimal support you need to visit the customers frequently in their own companies. This fact allows you to get an insight of very different branches (space and aeronautics, automotive engineering, mechanical engineering, steel engineering, shipbuilding etc.). There are other days one spends in his office to - for example - implement automated measuring sequences, integration and other solutions for customers.

What have been milestones (projects, happenings) during your career?
During my studies I had the possibility to participate in two measuring campaigns in Pakistan together with archaeologists from Heidelberg. Our task was to create topographic maps of the regions where the archaeologists had found rock paintings and inscriptions.
At the end of my studies I had the possibility to join two expeditions with the German research ship "Polarstern". As bathymeter (bathymetry = depth measurement) I surveyed the ocean floor of the Antarctic. It was an unforgettable experience!
